I have upgraded my Sherline mill from threaded rod to ball screw due to the speed limitations of the axis before loosing steps (the Z axis was the worst due to the load it was carrying). Double check that the column lock is not engaged and the backlash adjustments are reasonable (with the threaded rod you can't have the backlash adjustment too tight or it applies extra load on the axis). I would start with wiping down the Z axis screw and reapply some appropriate lubricant. The Z axis of the Sherline mill (from personal experience) will be the one likely to bind, the Z axis threaded rod is exposed at the back to air and will collect dust if it is properly oiled. Normally the threaded rods are hidden "below decks" and out of the way as far as swarf and dust is - What material are you profiling? Something that would make nice long chips or fine dust like brass or wood? Sherline mills and lathes use a threaded rod by default for the lead screw (unless someone is willing to pay the extra for ball screw).
